Arch Supports Weaken the Intrinsic Muscles of the Foot
Health care professionals from all over the world send me emails relating their experiences and frustrations using arch supports. Below is one such email:
For years I attempted to stabilize the foot by using a supportive type orthoses (See Photo below). These orthoses frequently incorporated an arch support with forefoot posting (wedging). They did stabilize the feet and improve posture (which in turn, decreased the foot, knee and low back pain). But at a very high price!
Supportive type orthoses
Over the years, it became apparent to me that by supporting the feet I was weakening them. As long as my patients wore their orthoses, their posture improved and their body pain was less. However, when the orthoses were not worn, their pain and poor posture quickly returned.
I was addicting my patients to their orthoses! At that time (mid 1990s), I knew that there had to be a better solution. So I stopped using orthoses and starting my research into proprioceptive insoles.
