Arch Supports Weaken the Intrinsic Muscles in the Feet
Before and after arch support therapy: Note the increased twisting in the foot
When arch supports (supportive type orthotics) are worn:
The intrinsic muscles of the feet are not required to support the arch and hence not used (See Why Not Orthotics?)
When muscles are not used, they become weaker (referred to as Disuse Atrophy)
After using arch supports, when the arch supports are not worn:
The weakened foot muscles are unable to support the arch
Foot twist is worse (See Animation above)
