For a long time, I have suspected that engramming actually goes in both directions (descending as well as ascending). A double blind study was conducted to test this hypothesis (December 2007) with a very body aware patient: When the proprioceptive signals are not correct, not only are the insoles uncomfortable, but this patient experiences visceral reactions as well (gut discomfort and aching, swelling of her lips, chest tightness etc).
History of Present Complaint: Patient has been wearing proprioceptive insoles for one year. Recently, she has noted that her initial symptoms were returning (back pain) along with new symptoms (gut symptoms, difficult breathing, swelling in her lips).
New insoles incorporating the same strength signal were ordered by the patient. With her consent, the following double blind test was conducted and reported in the patient’s own words (see below):
Protocol: My test was conducted by placing the new proprioceptive insoles in one envelope and the old proprioceptive insoles in a second identical envelope. Frank (her husband) did the muscle testing and did not know which insoles were in which envelope. I did not know either. The testing of the envelopes was random for each of the 10 different tests—sometimes envelope A was tested first, other times envelope B was tested first. I did not know whether envelope A or B was being tested at the time. The results of the testing are as follows:
Results:
Envelope A did not elicit any symptoms in all ten tests
Envelope A did not elicit any unpleasant reactions
Envelope A contained the new unworn proprioceptive Insoles
Envelope B initiated gut discomfort/aching, lip swelling, a ring around my lips, throat and chest tightness in all ten tests
Envelope B contained the old proprioceptive insoles.
The results of this double blind study (n=1) supports my premise that engramming does indeed go in both directions (ascending and descending).
