Change in Foot Twist using a Proprioceptive Signal Underneath the Feet

Proprioceptive Stimulation impact on the knees.  Note the improved knee alignment when a proprioceptive stimulation is placed underneath the feet. An immediate reduction of gonarthrosis (pain and stiffness in the knees) was noted following this correction in alignment. Other researchers (Pernarella et al) have reported similar findings.

Materials and Methods:

In a statistical study (Pernarella et al), 12 patients affected by knee pain participated in a clinical study: 6 were fitted with a placebo insoles, 6 were fitted with a proprioceptive insole (thickness <3 mm).  Results were compared with a Student T-test and the MCID was calculated.

Results:

Pain score increased in group A from 5,25 to 2,25 (p= 0.001) and in group B from 3,41 to 3,58 (p= ns). Knee stiffness modified in group A from 5,75 to 3,12 (p= 0.03) and in group B from 5 to 6,37 (p= 0.02). Physical function in group A decreased from 5,36 to 2,81 (p= 0.007) but increased non significantly in group B from 3,55 to 3,92. The global index was reduced from 5,38 to 2,72 (p= 0.004) in group A and changed in group B from 3,64 to 4,06 (p= ns). Group A at difference with group B show a significant MCID. Effect size > 0.8 demonstrate a strong therapeutic effect.
