3D Dimensional Screening of the Spine

I have used the Formetric Measuring System to analyze the effectiveness of Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy in reducing the Scoliotic curves.  This system was specifically developed to spare children from frequent radiation, historically necessary in the treatment of Adolescent Ideopathic Scoliosis.  (Incidence of cancer is significantly higher in children radiated every 3-6 months compared to the non-radiated population).

Protocol:
The patient stands 2 meters from the 3-D scanner.  A grid is projected onto the patient’s back with a light beam; which, in turn is scanned by a camera linked to the computer (image acquisition time is approximately 40 milliseconds).  Anatomical landmarks, vertebral position and rotation are detected using surface knowledge models and a 3D model of the surface of the spine is constructed.

Reliability studies (Goh, 1999; Klinik, 1998) have shown that the spinal rotations, lordotic and kyphotic curves are calculated to within 1-2 millimeters accuracy, all without the need for radiographic intervention.  These virtual models are very useful for screening and/or monitoring the progress of patients in spinal therapy.

Below is one example (of many) of a study done on a patient with a left thoracic curve.  The 3D VRS screening was taken immediately before the application of a proprioceptive stimulation, and then again, immediately after the application of a proprioceptive stimulation.  An almost immediate improvement in the thoracic curve was noted.
