Consequences of Using Too Strong of a Proprioceptive Signal or an Incorrect Proprioceptive Signal
This patient has a mixed postural distortional pattern: ascending major (preclinical clubfoot deformity) and descending minor (malocclusion).
Postural Analysis:
- Using the mouth guard alone improved the position of the auricle relative to the lateral malleolus; however, it also increased the anterior rotation of the innominates and decreased the strength of the abdominal muscles (incorrect proprioceptive signal).
- Using the proprioceptive insole alone decreased the anterior rotation of the innominates and increased the strength of the abdominal muscles, while maintaining the corrected head position.
- Using the combination of the mouth guard and proprioceptive insoles overcorrects the position of the head in a posterior direction (too strong of a proprioceptive signal).
Postural Intervention:
- Use of mouth guard was discontinued
- Use of proprioceptive insole was continued
