Mechanically dysfunctional (improperly manufactured) shoes can diminish the effectiveness of proprioceptive therapy.
The rationale (fundamental basis) of proprioceptive therapy is in the global improvement in postural alignment. Anything that distorts the postural alignment, can diminish the effectiveness of proprioceptive therapy.
Improperly manufactured shoes are one of the most common postural distorters. Mechanically dysfunctional shoes distort the proprioceptive signal being sent to the brain. This will diminish the effectiveness of the proprioceptive insoles (See Animation below).
Mechanically Dysfunctional Shoes vs Baseline Shoes (above photos are part of a series taken in Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy)
note the increased anterior (forward) rotation of the innominates
note the forward shift in the head position (auricle anterior to lateral malleolus)
Discussion: the above animation visually demonstrates the impact mechanically dysfunctional shoes have on the proprioceptive insoles (they diminish the insoles effectiveness in realigning the posture).
