Non vs Smooth Coupling

Dental Coupling Patterns - Smooth vs Non Smooth

Dental Orthopedists recognize that when the maxilla is not level to the ground (transverse plane), postural distortions can develop in the shoulders, spine and pelvis.  Typically, Dental Orthopedists look at the frontal plane distortions (what they refer to as Roll) when ascertaining these postural relationships.

Smooth Coupling - A predictable postural distortional pattern following the cant (roll) of the maxilla. There are two patterns:

  • If the maxilla is canted (rolled) to the left (1), the head rolls right (2), the shoulders roll left (3) and the pelvis rolls right (4) – See Diagram below.

  • If the maxilla is canted to the right, the head cants left, the shoulder cant right and the pelvis cants left.

Non Smooth Coupling (Mixed Postural Pattern resulting from a MalOcclusion and Rothbarts Foot or the PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity)

The postural pattern does not follow the cant (roll) of the maxilla.  Instead the predictable pattern resulting from a maxilla cant is skewed by the Ascending Distortional Pattern being generated from the feet.  There are many possible patterns.  One example of a Non Smooth Coupling is described below:

  • Maxilla cants (rolls) to the left (1), the head rolls right (2), the shoulders roll right (3) and the pelvis rolls right (4) – See Diagram Below

Descending Malocclusal Distortional Patterns (Smooth Coupling) can be successfully treated via Dental Orthopedics only.  Mixed Postural Distortional Patterns (Non Smooth Coupling) are more difficult to treat and typically require both Dental Orthopedic Orthotics and Proprioceptive Insoles.
