Scalene Muscles. Posterior, Anterior and Medius Scalenes become hypertonic with transverse rotational deformities in the spine (right clavicle partially removed to allow better visualization of the Medius and Anterior Scalene attachments into the first rib).
Ascending Postural Distortional Patterns:
- Clockwise rotation of the cervical vertebrae result in hypertonicity of the Scalene muscles on the left side of the body.
- Counterclockwise rotation of the cervical vertebrae result in hypertonicity of the Scalene muscles on the right side of the body.
- A Forward Head Position contracts the Anterior Scalene Muscle (and to a lesser degree the Posterior and Medius Scalenes). If this contraction is severe enough, it will compress the brachial plexus and/or subclavian vessels against the first rib (in the thoracic outlet). Clinically this is diagnosed as a Postural Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
